During this special event, Kimberly Meyer, the Houston Botanic Garden’s beekeeper and the farm manager of Shamba Ya Amani / Farm of Peace, will share her newest book, “Accidental Sisters: Refugee Women Struggling Together for a New American Dream.” In the book, readers join Meyer on a journey with six refugee women as they navigate a program in Houston for single mothers overseen by Alia Altikrity, a former refugee from Iraq. Alia shares with them — and thus, with readers — a guiding philosophy that small, direct, meaningful acts of mutual care are the foundation for a flourishing community. Immersive and intimate, “Accidental Sisters” inspires hope for a way forward in the face of pandemics, political inaction, and climate change.

Non-member fee of $20 includes admission to the Garden and a chance to hear from the author and some special guests whose stories it tells. Garden members receive a $10 discount.

Houston Botanic Garden offers free parking for most events, which are often held in climate-controlled environments, rain or shine. If you have specific questions, please email education@hbg.org.
