Environmental artist Molly Koehn will show you how craft natural dyes derived from organic materials such as onion skins, avocado peels, turmeric, and other items found in nature. Participants will get to experiment with a variety of colors and patterns by painting with thickened mordants, substances used in natural dyeing to create lasting colors on cloth. By shifting the tones and saturation levels of natural dyes, mordants allow for creation of a wide range of colors in a single dye vat or on a single piece of cloth.
During the workshop, participants will design, paint, and dye a cotton bandana and silk scarf (provided as part of registration), and learn tips for repeating the process at home.
Non-member fee of $55 includes general admission to the Garden, one cotton bandana and one silk scarf to dye, and mimosas. Garden members receive a $10 discount.
Houston Botanic Garden offers free parking for most events, which are often held in climate-controlled environments, rain or shine. If you have specific questions, please email education@hbg.org.
