Jeff Cummins, an orchid enthusiast and biologist with 30 years of orchid growing experience, will cover the following with participants:
· What makes an orchid an orchid.
· What makes orchids unique among houseplants.
· Introduction to common types of orchids you will encounter in the hobby.
· Basic guidelines on how to grow and flower orchids successfully.
· How to re-pot an orchid, via a hands-on lesson
In addition, participants — each of whom will get to take home a re-potted orchid — are invited to bring specific questions and photos of orchids they are growing for Jeff to answer.

Instructor Bio: Jeff Cummins is a biologist at the Cockrell Butterfly Center at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, where he cares for the plant collection and raises butterflies. He studied classical history at Marshall University and biology at the University of Houston. He has been growing orchids for over 30 years and loves sharing his experience with others curious about this amazing and diverse family of plants.
Skill Level: Workshop is intended for participants age 13 and older; all skill levels are welcome.
What to bring:
What to wear: Comfortable clothing for sitting and standing inside a climate-controlled tent.
What to expect: Participants will be seated in chairs at tables inside the climate-controlled Culinary Garden Tent for the majority of the class, with some standing during the hands-on re-potting activity. Participants will go home with their own re-potted orchid.
Class will be taught in English
