Join us at the Garden for a morning of orchid exploration. In this interactive class, we will learn about the more finicky and sensitive orchids and their particular needs. We will also explore exciting “companion plants” that enjoy and grow well with orchids, including some carnivorous plants. There will be a hands-on make-and-take portion where we will mount a Dendrobium loddigesii orchid to a cork bark slab for you to take home to care for and enjoy.

Instructor Bio – Jeff Cummins is a biologist at the Cockrell Butterfly Center at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, where he cares for the plant collection and raises butterflies. He studied classical history at Marshall University and biology at the University of Houston. He has been growing orchids for over 30 years and loves sharing his experience with others curious about this amazing and diverse family of plants.
Skill Level: Moderate (would benefit from having some experience caring for orchids)

What to Expect – Please allow yourself at least 15 minutes to arrive and situate yourself at the Garden. The Houston Botanic Garden offers free parking. Upon arrival, please show your electronic ticket to the entrance attendant. The restrooms are located in the Welcome Pavilion, past the Garden Shop, close to the entrance. We will meet in the Culinary Garden Tent, an air-conditioned space overlooking the garden, a few minutes’ walk from the entrance.
